How to Specify Stretched Bar LCD Display: Sizes and Interface

A stretched screen is usually chosen because a normal 16:9 display do not fit the job.

Maybe there is a long shelf with only a little vertical space. Maybe a retail window need a narrow advertising strip. Maybe an exhibition wall has a fixed opening that is too wide and too short for a standard monitor.

That is where Stretched Bar LCD Displays make sense.

But choose one is not simply a matter of finding the closest screen size. For a commercial project, the installation space, content, controller, brightness and mechanical design all need to work together.

Here is a practical way to specify a bar LCD display before ordering sample.

  1. Measure the Installation Space First

Don't start with the diagonal size.

Start from the opening.

Measure the available width, height and depth. Then check where the mounting holes and cables need to go.

This sounds basic, but it is one of the easiest thing to get wrong with a stretched LCD.

A panel may have the right width but still fail to fit because the FPC come out from the wrong side. Another panel may fit physically but leave no room for the driver board or power connection.

For an RFQ, giving the manufacturer the required W × H, available depth and installation drawing is much more useful than simply asking for a “32-inch stretched display.”

Show a supermarket or premium retail shelf with a long, narrow LCD display installed above the product. The screen should be showing promotional content rather than a generic desktop interface.

  1. Decide What the Screen Needs to Show

The content should influence the display specification.

A screen showing a product price and two lines of information does not need the same resolution as one showing detailed product videos.

For example:

  • Simple text and icons → moderate resolution may be enough
  • Product information → prioritize text clarity
  • Promotional video → higher resolution and better image processing
  • Scrolling content → pay attention to the controller and refresh performance
  • Multi-zone advertising → make sure the resolution matches the actual layout

Some stretched LCD modules use compact resolutions such as 320×120 or 480×128, while larger format can reach 1280×320 or 1920×720. Even higher can reach 4K, depending on the size. The correct choice depend on the physical size and the content, not simply on which resolution looks bigger on a specification sheet.

A useful rule is simple:

Choose the content layout first, then choose the resolution.

  1. Don't Assume HDMI Is the LCD Interface

This is something we see quite often during commercial display projects.

A buyer may say, “I need an HDMI bar LCD.”

But the LCD panel itself may use LVDS, MIPI, RGB or another interface. HDMI may be handled by the driver board.

These are two different things.

The interface should be selected according to the controller or media player being used.

LVDS is common in larger panel and industrial system. MIPI DSI is widely used with embedded processor. RGB and SPI are more common in smaller embedded applications. HDM I is convenient when the complete display include a suitable driver board for a PC, media player or signage controller.

If you are a system integrator, send the manufacturer your controller model or signal specification before choosing the LCD. It is much easier than trying to solve compatibility after the sample arrive.

  1. Brightness Should Match the Location

A display inside an exhibition booth and a display behind a shop window do not have the same lighting condition.

For indoor retail store, moderate commercial brightness may be sufficient.

For a storefront window, the situation changed. Daylight can wash out the image, especially when the screen faces direct sunlight.

Before selecting brightness, consider:

  • Indoor or window installation
  • Direct sunlight exposure
  • Viewing distance
  • Operating hours
  • Glass reflections
  • Content type

Don't choose brightness simply because a higher number sounds better. Excessive brightness can increase power consumption and may not provide a real benefit in a controlled indoor environment.

Show a fashion, cosmetic or electronic store with a high-brightness stretched LCD installed behind the glass. The scene should be daytime, making the brightness requirement obvious.

  1. Check the Mechanical Details Before Approving the Sample

For a stretched display, mechanical details can be just as important as the LCD specification.

Ask for the panel drawing and check:

  • Overall dimensions
  • Active area
  • Panel thickness
  • FPC exit direction
  • Connector position
  • Mounting holes
  • Cable clearance
  • Driver-board location

The FPC is particularly easy to overlook.

If the enclosure has been designed around a bottom cable exit but the selected panel has a side exit, the entire structure may need to be changed accordingly.

For OEM project, manufacturer can sometimes adjust FPC routing, connector position, cover glass or enclosure design during development. These details are much easier to handle before mass production than after tooling has started.

  1. Different Buyers Need to Look at Different Things

Advertising Agencies

Look at the visual side first:

aspect ratio + brightness + content format + installation position

If the campaign used custom advertising artwork, give the creative team the final pixel dimensions early. It prevents designers from creating 16:9 content that later has to be heavily cropped.

Retail Brands

Focus on:

brightness + viewing angle + operating time + physical integration

A shelf display may run for many hours every day. Reliability matters more than simply choosing the highest resolution.

System Integrators

Start from the electronics:

processor → interface → driver board → resolution → power → enclosure

The LCD is only one part of the system.

Exhibition Builders

Pay more attention to:

overall dimensions + mounting + cable routing + installation time

Exhibition structures are often built to a fixed drawing. If the screen changes at the last minute, there may be no easy way to modify the finished structure.

  1. Standard Panel or Custom Bar LCD Display?

For testing a concept, a standard panel is normally the faster option.

For a retail rollout, advertising network or custom equipment project, customization may be worthwhile.

Depending on the application, customization can involve:

  • Screen dimensions
  • Brightness
  • Touch
  • FPC routing
  • Connector position
  • Driver board
  • Metal enclosure
  • Mounting structure
  • Protective glass

The decision should be based on the quantity and the installation requirements.

If ten screens are needed for a temporary campaign, a standard solution may be more practical.

If hundreds of displays will be installed across a retail chain, spending more time on the mechanical and electronic design at the beginning can save problems later.

  1. A Better Way to Send an RFQ

Instead of writing:

“Please quote a 32-inch stretched LCD.”

Send something closer to this:

Application: retail shelf advertising
Opening: 900 × 180 mm
Viewing distance: 1–2 m
Installation: indoor
Content: product video and promotional graphics
Interface: HDMI preferred
Operating time: 12 hours/day
Quantity: 20 samples + 500 units estimated
Enclosure: custom metal housing required

This gives the manufacturer something to work with.

It also makes the quotation more meaningful because the supplier can recommend a panel, driver board and mechanical solution instead of simply sending a model number.

  1. Quick Specification Checklist

Before approving a Stretched Bar LCD Display, confirm:

  • Screen width and height
  • Resolution
  • Aspect ratio
  • Brightness
  • Viewing distance
  • LCD interface
  • Driver-board interface
  • FPC direction
  • Connector location
  • Mounting method
  • Operating temperature
  • Daily operating hours
  • Touch requirement
  • Enclosure requirement
  • Sample quantity and mass-production quantity

These details may look small individually. Together, they determine whether the finished display will actually work in the project.

FAQ

①What’s a Stretched Bar LCD Display ?

A Stretched Bar LCD Display is an elongated LCD designed for application where a conventional rectangular screen does not fit the available space. It is commonly used in retail fixtures, advertising structures, transportation displays, industrial equipment and custom commercial displays.

②What is the difference between a bar LCD display and a normal LCD?

The main difference is the aspect ratio. A bar LCD is much longer and narrower, allowing it to fit spaces where a standard 16:9 screen would waste space.

③Which interface is best for a bar LCD display?

There is no universal answer. The interface should match the controller and system architecture. LVDS, MIPI, RGB, SPI and HDM I-based solutions can all be used depending on the panel and application.

④Can a Stretched Bar LCD Display be customized?

Yes. Commercial OEM projects may require custom dimensions, brightness, FPC routing, connector position, driver board, touch panel or metal housing.

⑤What should I send a manufacturer for a quotation?

At minimum, provide the required screen dimension, resolution, application, viewing distance, brightness requirement, interface, installation environment and estimated quantity.

⑥Specify the Project, Not Just the Screen

The best Stretched Bar LCD Displays are not necessarily the largest, brightest or highest-resolution models.

They are the ones that fit the space, work with the controller and show the right content without creating unnecessary problems during installation.

For advertising agencies, retail brands, system integrators and exhibition builders, that is the real purpose of specification.

At Clientop, we can work from the project requirement and help match the LCD panel, driver board, enclosure and mounting structure for commercial OEM applications.
